we got here.
As most everyone knows, in 1984 the United States Congress deregulated long distance
services. As a result of that action the Bell Telephone and American Telephone and
Telegraph (AT&T) companies lost their monopoly control over long distance service.
Since then you have seen the emergence of a number of competitors (MCI, Sprint, Qwest,
Frontier, etc.) some of whom became nearly as large as AT&T itself. In 1996 Congress deregulated local calling services. This
action broke up the long-standing stranglehold that the Regional Bell Operating
Companies (the Baby Bells], and one or two other huge companies
[such as GTE which is now Verizon], had on local calling. Into this opportunity,
